WELCOME THE MONSOON RAINS ... BUT FIRST LEARN SOME SAFETY PRECAUTIONS!

The sun and clouds quench the thirst of the earth with the blink of an eye. For the rest of the country, these rains are a normal routine, but someone should ask the people of Karachi what these rains are for them. Frightened by the rain, these people start arranging hot pakoras and tea with the first drop of rain. All the members of the family and friends enjoy this beautiful season together. By the way, the people of Karachi are very lively. Of course, they face many losses and difficulties in this monsoon rain, but they do not want to waste this beautiful season because of these problems.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday forecast the first spell of monsoon rains in Karachi from June 22. PMD Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz said that pre-monsoon rains in Karachi could start from the third week of this month.

Rain is a blessing but Karachi people have to face many problems in this season. In the rains of 2020, the situation became very bad but in 2021, better measures were taken by the Sindh government. As far as electricity is concerned, it is deliberately turned off in the rainy season as people in the backward areas get into accidents due to lack of precautionary measures in the rain.

During August 2020, Karachi alone received 484 mm (19 inches) of rain. This is the highest rainfall record in the last 90 years. It rained for more than 12 hours in Karachi and it caused havoc in Karachi. Rainwater and water from drains flooded most of the roads and streets in the residential areas, causing severe hardship to the residents. There were also incidents of electric shocks. As a result, on 29 August 2020, the relief commissioner was appointed to 6 districts of Karachi. The Sindh government declared the area a "disaster area" under the Sindh National Committees (P&R) Act, 1958. 2021 went a little better because after last year's flood tragedy, Karachi City and Sindh Province authorities developed the city's first flood management plan to ensure that such a catastrophe does not happen again. Under the plan, the city's major drainage system was cleaned up, and illegal structures along with drainage ditches were demolished, blocking access to the sea.

SOME MONSOON PRECAUTIONS CITIZENS MUST TAKE:

* Check all the wiring of the house before the rain. The power lines should not be bare. By the way, there is no need to wait for rain for this. Bare electrical wires are the cause of most accidents.

* Do not install washing machine for laundry during rain.

* Plumbing work should not be done during monsoon. If you are trapped outside with thunderstorms and no safe haven available, look for a low place away from high ground, water, trees and metal objects.

* Protect outdoor items that may be damaged by rain.

* Keep emergency lights, battery flashlights and battery-powered electrical items.

* Frequent lightning strikes also occur. Remember, rain doesn't have to be lightning. Lightning strikes often after heavy rains, ie avoid going outside even after the rains have stopped. As soon as you hear the thunder, go to a shelter.

* Stay away from the phone. Even cordless phones can be shocked when there is a lightning strike nearby. Also use cell phones carefully.

* Stay away from windows and doors during heavy rains and strong winds.

* Avoid road underpasses, drainage ditches, low lying areas and areas where water accumulates.

* Always be aware of the day forecast by the Meteorological Department and be aware of the changing conditions during the day.

* Keep checking on the roof of the house to see if there is any standing water.
