AUSTRALIA BEAT INDIA BY 21 RUNS: THIRD MEN’S
ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL – AS IT HAPPENED
In a thrilling encounter, Australia defeated
India by 21 runs in the third men’s one-day international (ODI) match held at
the Manuka Oval in Canberra. The victory gave Australia a 2-1 lead in the
three-match ODI series against India.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat
first. The hosts got off to a solid start, with openers David Warner and Aaron
Finch putting up a 142-run partnership for the first wicket. Warner was the
more aggressive of the two, scoring 83 off just 77 balls, while Finch played a
more patient innings of 60 off 69 balls.
India’s bowlers struggled to contain Australia’s
top order, with Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah all going for
over 50 runs each. It was only thanks to some late wickets from Yuzvendra
Chahal and Shardul Thakur that India managed to slow down Australia’s run rate.
In response, India got off to a shaky start,
losing opener Shikhar Dhawan for a duck in the second over. However, captain
Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill steadied the ship with a 56-run partnership for
the second wicket. Gill was eventually dismissed for 33, but Kohli continued to
anchor the innings, scoring 87 off 97 balls.
However, India’s middle order failed to build
on Kohli’s foundation, with only Hardik Pandya (28) and Ravindra Jadeja (24)
making significant contributions. Australia’s bowlers, led by Josh Hazlewood’s 5-wicket
haul, kept the pressure on India throughout the innings.
In the end, India were bowled out for 338 in
the 50th over, falling short of Australia’s total of 369/6. Hazlewood was named
player of the match for his impressive bowling performance.
The result sets up an exciting T20 series
between the two teams, with the first match set to take place on December 4 at
the same venue. Both teams will be looking to build momentum ahead of the
upcoming Test series.
